Steps to Replace the Rear Axle Hub Outer Bearing:
1. Prepare the Vehicle: Park the vehicle on a flat surface, engage
the parking brake, and chock the front wheels. Lift the rear of the
vehicle with a jack and secure it on jack stands.
2. Remove the Wheel: Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel, lift the
wheel off the hub, and set it aside.
3. Access the Rear Axle Hub: Depending on the vehicle model, you
may need to remove the brake caliper, rotor, and any other
components obstructing access to the rear axle hub.
4. Remove the Axle Nut: Locate the axle nut at the center of the
hub and remove it using a socket and ratchet.
5. Remove the Hub: Use a hammer and a suitable tool to gently tap
the rear axle hub to loosen it from the axle. Once loose, remove
the hub from the axle.
6. Remove the Old Outer Bearing: The outer bearing is typically
located inside the hub assembly. Use a seal puller to remove any
seals, and a bearing puller to extract the old outer bearing.
7. Install the New Bearing: Apply a thin layer of bearing grease to
the new outer bearing. Press the new bearing into the hub assembly,
ensuring it is seated correctly.
8. Reassemble the Hub: Reinstall any seals and components that were
removed during disassembly. Ensure everything is properly aligned
and tightened.
9. Reinstall the Hub: Slide the hub back onto the axle shaft and
tighten the axle nut to the manufacturer's specifications.
10. Reassemble the Brake Components: Reinstall the brake rotor,
caliper, and any other components that were removed.
11. Install the Wheel: Put the wheel back on the hub and tighten
the lug nuts.
12. Lower the Vehicle: Carefully lower the vehicle off the jack
stands.
13. Test Drive: Take the vehicle for a test drive to ensure the
rear axle hub outer bearing replacement was successful.
